How to upgrade RAM in your Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q

Note: Before beginning any upgrades on a PC, it's a good idea to back up your data in the unlikely event something should go wrong. You'll also want to ensure you're not working in a static-filled environment, as it can cause damage to a PC's internal hardware. Consider investing in an anti-static wristband to avoid unnecessary damage.

Lenovo's ThinkCentre M720q Tiny, alongside upgradeable M.2 SSD, and 2.5-inch drive, has two slots for DDR4 SODIMM RAM, accessible through a bottom panel on the PC's chassis.   1. Unscrew the large black fastener on the back of the ThinkCentre M720q.

  2. Slide the top and front portions of the chassis cover away from the rear. It should separate with relative ease.

  3. Turn the M720q over to reveal another removable panel.

  4. Slide the bottom panel away from the rear of the device. It should come away with relative ease.

  5. Slide the silver arms off of the first stick of RAM. Upon releasing both clips, the RAM should pop up and remain at an angle.

  6. Remove the RAM from the slot by carefully pulling it away.

  7. Insert the new RAM into the slot at about a 45-degree angle. Notice it is keyed and will only fit one way.

  8. Press down on the RAM until it clicks into place. You should see both silver arms clip back into place to hold the RAM securely.

  9. Slide the bottom panel back onto the M720q main chassis.

  10. Slide the top and front panels of the M720q back on the main chassis.

  11. Screw in the single black fastener on the back of the M720q.

You should now be free to power on your ThinkCentre M720q Tiny to ensure the RAM upgrade went according to plan. You can check to see if it's been recognized by your system with the following steps.

  1. Right-click the Start button.

  2. Click System.

You should now be able to see the total amount of installed RAM in the Device specifications section. As long as it matches the total amount you have installed, your upgrade was a success.

What you are proposing is to put in 1 x 1GB memory in one slot. That will work. However, it will work in single channel mode and hence slower.

Furthermore when you want to upgrade later say to add another 1 x 1GB you may not be able to get a match to your original to create a matching pair. Some systems are not too fussy so long as both slots contain the same size and rated memory, others are more fussy. I do not know how yours will behave.

My view is go for a matched pair of 1 x 1GB. That way you get dual channel performance and it will be the better for it anyway.

Finally check your motherboard, does it have 2 slots or 4 slots? The manual suggests that it should have 4 slots.

If it does have 4 slots then your options increase.
For example you could add another 2 x 512 MB RAM in dual channel mode in the remaining two empty slots. This would give you a total of 2 GB (4 x 512 MB)
