In spite of the name, the Sands Regency has nothing to do with the iconic Sands Hotel in Las Vegas, or the Las Vegas Sands corporation, which bought the old Sands and tore it down to build the Venetian, and is the world’s largest casino company.

Perhaps the Sands Regency was named after the Sands in Las Vegas, which had already been operating for 15 years and was world famous in the era that the Sands Regency was built, but all these years later the Sands in Reno has developed quite a history of its own.

Sheldon Adelson’s Sands Casino to pay $47 million fine for failing to report deposits from alleged drug trafficker. Las Vegas Sands Corp., which owns the Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino.

The Sands Regency was built in 1970 by the Cladianos family, in not the best area of downtown Reno, but in spite of the location, this new 15 story hotel and casino caught on pretty well, and in particular, attracted a lot of local gamblers, which remains the case to this day.

Business was quite good actually, which allowed for a second tower to be built in 1979, and a third one in 1983, bringing the total room count up to its current 883. So this is more than just a locals casino as they attract a fair number of out of town visitors as well.

The casino at the Sands Regency is a pretty modest sized one, at only 25,791 square feet, there’s plenty of things to play here, and the Sands Regency prides themselves on the fun their players have with them, and this is certainly a more fun casino than most.

The hotel casino has changed hands a few times over the last 46 years, and is now owned by a company called Truckee Gaming, which was created by the property’s CEO to operate this historic downtown casino hotel.

The Features of the Sands Regency

The rooms here are quite nice for an older hotel, and quite nice period actually. The color schemes are simply gorgeous, even the ones in the 377 square feet standard rooms, and while some of the suites aren’t exactly what a lot of people call suites, like for instance the 395 square foot King Suite, it does come with an upgraded bathroom with a whirlpool tub and separate shower and is a little bigger than the standard rooms at least.

They do have bigger suites here though, including the 520 square foot Dynasty Suite, the 784 square foot Luxury Suite, and the 1,150 square foot Presidential Suite.

What really makes this hotel stand out are the great deals. Now one can get plenty of deals for hotel rooms in Reno, but the packages at the Sands Regency are just fabulous.

For $50, you can get two nights’ accommodations here, along with 5 free beer and a $20 dining credit. For just $75, you can get three nights here, a bottle of champagne, a $20 food credit, and a free suite upgrade when available.

On Friday and Saturday nights, when the prices go way up at some places, the Sands keeps them reasonable, and instead of the $25 per night package it goes up to $45, but that means you can stay both Friday and Saturday night for just $90, and get the beer or champagne and the $20 meal credit to boot.

They claim this is the best hotel deal in Reno and it might be the best one anywhere period. If you are bringing a group of people of 20 or more, they promise even better deals for you.

The Sands boasts 600 of the loosest slots in Reno, which are all easy and fun to play. There’s also a selection of table games to be enjoyed here, including single deck Blackjack with Royal Match, Roulette, Craps, and 3 Card Poker.

They also roll out Texas Holdem at their poker tables, for those in the mood to take on other players. Sports bettors are also taken care of in their William Hill branded race and sports book, and the Sands Regency also has the best bingo in town in their cozy bingo hall.

The Sands Regency is a long way away from the big Las Vegas strip resorts, or even the finest and luxurious ones in Reno, but this is still a hotel casino that has quite a bit to offer, especially in terms of value and fun for the money. It’s been a hit on the Reno scene since 1970 and isn’t slowing down at all.

Sands Regency is a hotel and casino located in Downtown Reno, Nevada. It is owned and operated by Jacobs Entertainment.

History[edit]

Former logo

The Sands Regency opened in the early 1970s by the Cladianos family with a small hotel and casino. The hotel tower stood 15 stories and was not in the most prospective area of town at that time and even in some regards to this day but nevertheless it grew. By the late 1970s early 1980s a second tower and more casino space was built. By this time, the company was known as Sands Regent and the hotel's name became 'Sands Regency' By the late 1980s, a third and final tower had been constructed giving the hotel a total of 800 rooms, and in the new tower came a parking garage. The new tower was detached from the main two towers but at the same time connected with a link between it and the original towers.

The Sands Regency is very popular among locals, bowlers and Cribbage players, whom they cater to in great numbers. In the mid-1990s, Tony Roma's Ribs House opened a location inside the hotel, a comedy club opened in 2000 along with an original 'Mel's' diner, all gaining to the Sands' credibility. The parent, Sands Regent, by 2006 owned and operated three properties, all in the Reno Sparks area; they included the flagship, Sands Regency, the small Rail City Casino in Sparks and Gold Ranch Casino/RV Park near California off I-80 west of Reno.

Las Vegas–based Herbst Gaming (later Affinity Gaming), famous for its 'Terrible's' trademark, began looking into the Reno market in 2005 and liked what they saw. They wanted to get into the market quickly and saw opportunity with Sands Regent. They bid for and won the company assets, closing their deal in October 2006, and renamed all of the Sands Regent properties without 'changing' the names. The Sands Regency became Sands Regency, 'A Terrible's Property', while the other two properties became 'Terrible's' Rail City and Gold Ranch respectively. The Sands Regency began a major renovation in 2005, and Herbst Gaming finished it in 2007. They also renovated and expanded Rail City, which Sands Regent started. Sands Regent CEO Ferenc Szony remained on board.

Many Reno locals know the Sands for its vibrant exterior color schemes; for over 10 years the Sands was always red with white accents, then suddenly overnight in 2003 Sands Regent painted it a bright yellow with blue accents that received mixed reviews. After the Herbst buyout, they painted it a softer gold with red accents to depict a skyline on the hotel towers' facade that received media attention for creativity.

Tony Roma's Rib House was closed in 2006 and replaced with Fuzio Pasta and Steaks in 2007 as part of a renovation at the Sands, in 2011 it was closed down due to lack of popularity but quickly replaced with a casual-upscale bistro called 'The Copa'. Mel's remains in operation. There is also Taco's Tijuana inside the hotel just recently opened, as well as a coffee shop with free wi-fi, and the hotel has a buffet with a different selection every night.

On February 1, 2013, Affinity sold the Sands Regency, along with the Gold Ranch and another casino in Dayton, for $19.2 million to Truckee Gaming, a new company led by Szony.[1][2] In July 2017, Jacobs Entertainment purchased the property from Truckee Gaming for $30 million.[3][4][5]
